Geek chic, WHY?!
I really want to know who was the asshole who started this trend. I want to know who was the first idiot to ever say “you know what I need? Some big framed glasses with no lenses. And maybe a cute little bow tie… that would totally kill it”.
Let me tell you this: if I walked out of my house with my pretty blazer and my cute ankle boots and a cervical collar, I would look stupid, right? If I was walking down the street with a pair of crutches and high heels, I would look really really stupid, right?
So, why is that different from wearing glasses you don’t actually need?!?!

Ugh… stupid bloggers, wearing stupid glasses, looking like fucking rapists… I think that short-sighted people all over the world should be mad at those who wear glasses just to look “cool”.
The only thing that I hate more than seeing people attempting to do the “geek chic look”, is seeing people attempting to do it now. Come on! This stupid trend started like in 2008… shit, this should have died 2 months after it started… I blame hipsters all around the world for not letting it go away.
A long ago Gala Darling blogged about this geek-chic trend, this is what she had to say:

HAHAHA Oh my god… Look: wearing glasses that you don’t need is like drinking medicine when you’re not sick. And what’s the deal with telling people to wear stuff that only die-hard fans will recognize?? How’s this cool? It’s totally stupid! How fucking wannabe can you be?
This is the reason I never read this Gala Darling person’s blog… I have the strong feeling that she’s absolutely stupid. Judging by this entry, I think I’m right.

hi i’m not writting this to annoy you, the girl who is wearing the glasses is a fashion blogger miss pandora but she really needs glasses, in a interview it was said that she is myopic . ok she has chosen wayfarer instead of classic glasses but she really needs them so it’s a bad example.

Hooray for Nati Hell! Aside from the preposterous assumption that you can be a geek just by dressing like one, your comment about Jane made me laugh. However, if I had Down’s Syndrome I would be really insulted.
By my book, you can’t be a geek until you’ve had people deliberately trip you up in middle school, make fun of your ( perfectly normal, in your own eyes- no Tavi-style getups here) clothes, toss your books out the window (along with your glasses, if they’ve got those) and generally make your life miserable for existing, at any age between 11-17.
I guess those are stiff qualifying criteria, but I wonder how ‘chic’ they’d be considered by these idiots.
I disagree, plenty of geeks were tormented for their self-expression.
@ Eliza- my point is, you have no right to call yourself a geek unless you’ve been tormented for being one (for whatever reason, whether it’s your existence or your self-expression). These days, I’m glad the word has a positive spin but it doesn’t change the fact that this lot would still run a thousand miles from a fan convention or an actual, non-cool nerdy activity.
God help us all if we have to wear hideous effing spectacle frames that do jack shit for our eyesight to be “in”. Screw you Jane!
OH GOD MAKE IT STOP. I’ve worn thick dark frames since 2001 because
a) I actually have severe myopia
b) I can’t do contact lenses, they irritate my eyes
c) fat dark frames don’t break, or cause the glass inside to break, when dropped/squeezed.
d) (biggest factor apart from the actual myopia) they were the cheapest frames around, no one wanted to wear fat glasses back then and I had to pay for my own- no trendy Ray-Bans for me.
e) I love mine. DERP me if you want, guys, but when I look at my dark cat-eye frames, I don’t see ‘geek girl’, I see Marilyn Monroe in How To Marry A Millionaire and I’d like to see anyone argue that SHE looked geeky.
I can understand Cherryblossomgirl’s bridesmaid wearing them, she actually is shortsighted or so she says and wears hers all the time for the last 3 years, but the other idiots- WHY? The idea of “geek chic” is, frankly speaking, insulting to former (and actual) geeks, the girls prancing around in lensless/unnecessary glasses and “granny” clothes now would probably avoid true geeks (you know, ones who aren’t conventionally pretty/don’t dress all fashionlike) like filthy bacteria. Maybe the cervical collar/crutches analogy isn’t quite apt, but I do wonder- if braces suddenly became the new symbol of ‘geek’ chic, would these girls get some fake wires slapped over their teeth?
I guess what I’m trying to say is, they can stop trying to co-opt my personality traits, they are the ones who are lame for doing so and anyone who thinks ‘geeks’ are a “trend” is probably not one- no matter how many issues of National Geographic they’ve read (they’re also probably complete idiots for making the assumption in the first place).
Whoever started geek chic can’t be old enough to remember music videos from the 1980’s. Back then, it was the geeks who got beaten up in those videos and most of those geeks looked like Jane does in this picture.
I’m also old enough to remember when some people tried to get fake crutches in style. Fortunately for all, that didn’t work. Those people looked really stupid using crutches while WALKING around school.

You have a really good sense of humor and always make me laugh. Normally I agree with everything you write. However, not this time.
First of all. You say you shouldn’t wear something you don’t NEED. Do we actually NEED stuff like necklaces, rings, bracelets, belts (just for the look), hair stuff and so on? Of course we don’t, but we use them to accessorize the look, to add a little extra, to make it more interesting. The same thing with geek glasses.

It’s not all about trends, I think it’s kinda cool not to wear things that are bang on trend.
There’s some people who look really good with geek glasses, for example Louise from http://www.misspandora.fr. I think the glasses look amazing on her.
Of course, there are people who don’t know how to wear the glasses properly, and look kinda silly, but in my opinion it can add a little extra to a boring outfit :).
I also know some people who have problems with their sight,so they use the Ray ban wayfarer geek glasses, for their sight.
All in all, I think you exaggerated this time. At least, in my opinion 🙂
Kristiana, glasses are not the same as makeup or jewellery- Nati was right to compare wearing fake glasses to carrying around a crutch when you don’t actually need one. I’d say it’s more like carrying a walking stick when you don’t need it- glasses, unlike jewellery etc, are actually used for a medical purpose (ie to correct defective eyesight) so wearing superfluous ones does make the wearer look stupid- if that is your ‘extra’, well then so be it.
This is not to judge people who actually have defective eyesight and wear glasses to correct it, like misspandora, whose glasses I agree look lovely. But as an actual wearer of prescription glasses, it annoys me that some young idiots think it’s trendy to fake my condition for the sake of a fashion accessory.
PS: I’m not the same Anna who talked about the 3D glasses.
You know how it can get worse then that? When they get the glasses from watching 3d movies and punch out the lens and wear them. It says 3D on the side, guys… plus you look even more so idiotic. At least when it has lens, I don’t know if you need it or not but without the lens? Come on! I’ve actually seen this a couple of times now.
Although don’t laugh – once I accidentally chopped my fringe very badly and didn’t have time to go to a hairdresser to sort it out. So I bought a pair of these “geek chic” glasses on a rush because they are very cheap and I wore them to hide the unevenness of my stupid fringe. I’m very sorry for my fashion sin.

This post doesn’t make sense to me. I’m with Kristiana. Medical purpose or not…glasses have become an accessory in the fashion world and I have trouble figuring out how someone can disagree? (Unless you are an angry hipster hating secret hipster of course…because those are the only ppl that waste their time talking about how much they hate cool kids)

As a near-sighted person, I find this totally idiotic. I waited YEARS to be able to wear contacts, and these morons are wearing fake glasses. Some with no lenses, which is just absurd. Wait, do they wear them to seem smarter? Because maybe they have a point. ’cause someone who wears fake glasses with no lenses is definitely not that smart. Make no mistake though, they won’t be looking any smarter, either.

I have myopia (dioptry or whatever it’s called in English of 8 and 8.5 on both eyes, I think, and scored 2/10 at the letter-reading with my glasses on last time), but I would wear glasses even if I didn’t.
There is no way I’ll wear boring contacts.
Sorry to the people who does, but I hate feeling forced to do such things, plus I can’t “move” my eyes correctly with these stuffs in. (as for the people who want to wear these, I’ve been told that the “can’t move” feeling goes away after a while)

If I stopped wearing my glasses, it would be losing a battle agaisnt people who told me to get contacts, and would regularly insult me for wearing glasses (hint: they would insult me even if I didn’t, let’s bother them!)

I go back and forth with this trend. Due to my congenital contacts my glasses are about an inch thick and ridiculously magnifying. On one hand I dislike the trendy aspect of it (why are you trying to pretend you have less then perfect vision? You’re vision is perfect, you’re just pissing me off). On the other I like not sticking out like a sore thumb in my extremely geeky (albeit legitimate) glasses.
*cataracts. See, clearly, glasses don’t make you that much smarter.

I do not get why glasses can’t simply be a fashion accesory. They migh have started as a medical item, so what ( in fact, if the blogger just took her time to investigate about glasses, she would have noticed using glasses as a merely aesthetic accesory IS ABSOLUTELY NOT A “HIPSTER” TREND) . I think it’s quite lame to criticise such an epistemological change, it happens all the time in fashion ( oh! and in so many other human activities) . So you should by no means wear a hat if it isn’t freezing, wear boots if it isn’t rainning, have a nosejob done unless your nose is medically wrong…have long hair if you are not a woman, use pants if you’re not a man…and we could go on forever.
As for the “geek-chic” term, well, it’s just a catch name invented by fashion editors. It has nothing to do with actually “geek” people, who certainly needn’t wear thick dark glasses for beeing pointed as geeks. IT’S ANOTHER SUPER STUPID CLICHE, most ppl here did not even stop to think about.
It’s just an arbitrary association of terms and cliches; the discussion would be rather interesting if it wasn’t so blind sighted by this kind of “hatred” I sense in most comments.
I do beleive it’s interesting to have a different space where to discuss about something as thouglessly swallowed as fashion nowdays, but not with this pretentious attitude.
Or at least , if you are going to act smart and criticise fashion bloggers (and fashion bloggers’ followers) for being stupid, then you should put a little more effort in not saying similar stupid things.

I actually think it helps people who need prescription glasses. I am very short sighted (meaning without glasses I can barely get to the kitchen in my own apartment) and I wear contact lenses most of the time more for convenience purposes but sometimes (like after a long night out) it is just more comfortable wearing glasses. The whole nerd-glasses trend makes me feel much more comfortable walking around with glasses. Before this trend became so popular, people would sometimes look at me as if they felt sorry for me (you have to imagine that I needed very thick glasses), which isn’t a nice feeling. I don’t see a reason why nerd-glasses could be an insult for vision impaired people.
I don’t think there is a way to rationalize fashion. There’s not even a completely rational argument why we don’t just all wear sweatpants and T-shirts at all times…..
I have to wear reading glasses (which annoys the shit out of me because I always sit on them or something and I don’t have the money for a pair with the right prescription which further annoys the shit out of me) on top of the contacts or glasses I must wear if I want to be able to see oncoming traffic or anything more than two metres away.
BUT I DON’T CARE IF PEOPLE WEARING GLASSES AS A FASHION STATEMENT. I, myself, have glasses. Most of them have looked good (though the few times I’ve broken them between new prescriptions, I end up with embarrassing goggle-looking ones). I actually think I look better with glasses than without, so I’m sort of glad contacts didn’t work out! (I have myopia and astigmatism, so I’d have to get Torque contacts..bleh)
I don’t mind people wearing glasses for fashion (though perhaps if I saw people at my school wearing them, I’d be kind of mad). But when I saw glasses, I mean, like, glasses that people would wear, with glass lenses. I hate seeing people with the plastic, square, no-lens glasses. I mean, it’s not like it totally annoys me as a glasses-wearer, but they don’t look good. I mean, they probably look good with some clothing, but when someone is wearing an Aeropostale shirt and jeans, these glasses stick out like a sore thumb, especially since they have no lenses. And that’s what makes me mad (talking about someone in middle school). xD

I think when it comes to fashion (ignoring issues like sweat shop labour or the waste caused by disposable fashion), it’s generally whenever or not a concept is well executed as opposed to there being flawed concepts. I think it is a part of what makes fashion so interesting.
